Tanguy Ndombele returns as resurgence of Tottenham’s forgotten man continues – Spurs latest loan

It’s been a mixed week on the loan front at Tottenham Hotspur.

After seeing Troy Parrott and Jack Clarke on the scoresheet midweek, a few players weren’t in action for their respective clubs this weekend for various reasons. Kion Etete sadly missed out through injury, as there was no place in the Charlton Athletic squad for Nile John, whose wait to make his first appearance for Addicks continues.

Alfie Whiteman is also still waiting to return to the pitch for Swedish side Degerfors as this year’s Allsvenskan campaign begins in early April. So how exactly have the rest of Spurs fared over the past week? football.london have a look.

Tanguy Ndombele (Lyon)

It was a week of ups and downs for Ndombele and Lyon after he returned to the team.

Absent just over a week ago for their 4-1 win at Lorient due to muscle pain, the midfielder was back in the squad midweek as they won 1-0 in Porto in the first leg of the knockout stages of the Europa League.

Playing the full 90 minutes in Portugal, Ndombele and his teammates are hoping for more success this Thursday when the teams meet again at Groupama Stadium.

Unfortunately, Porto were unable to confirm their European victory when they returned to domestic action on Sunday, losing 4-2 at home to Rennes, who were 4-0 down after 50 minutes.

Ndombele played 79 minutes of the loss and received a booking 20 minutes later.

Bryan Gil (Valencia)

Valencia could only manage one point on Saturday after a 0-0 draw at Getafe.

Gil started for Los Che but couldn’t help but inspire his side to victory as they failed to register a shot on target against their lowly opponents.

Valencia don’t have a midweek game so they have to wait until Saturday afternoon to get back into action when they travel to Elche.

The 21-year-old has now made nine appearances for the Spanish side, registering one assist since leaving Tottenham.

Giovani Lo Celso (Villarreal)

Villarreal have kept in touch with their rivals for a European spot after a narrow 1-0 victory against Celta Vigo on Saturday.

Lo Celso started again for the Yellow Submarine and played in an attacking midfield role during his 80 minutes on the pitch.

Attention now turns to Wednesday night’s crucial Champions League round of 16 second leg away to Juventus, with it 1-1 from the first leg.

Villarreal will then return to the league on Sunday with an away game against relegation-threatened Cadiz.

Lo Celso has made seven appearances for Unai Emery’s side since his deadline move from Tottenham.

Pope Matar Sarr (Metz)

Sarr was back in the Metz squad on Sunday and played the whole game scoring a point after a 0-0 draw at home to Lens.

In and out of the squad since late October, it will have done the youngster good to have 90 minutes in the tank after a frustrating few months.

However, it’s now all about making sure it becomes a regular occurrence as he aims to show Tottenham what he’s talking about when he returns to N17 this summer.

Sarr will hope he has done enough to start for Rennes next Sunday when Metz play their last Ligue 1 game before the international break.

Cameron Carter-Vickers (Celtic)

It was a rare weekend without a game for Carter-Vickers and Celtic as they instead play Monday night in the Scottish Cup quarter-final against Dundee United.

Already a Scottish League Cup winner in December against Hibs, Ange Postecoglou will be determined to ensure there is no cup clash in Tannadice as his side aim for the treble.

Carter-Vickers’ loan spell has been a huge success so far and the player is said to have interested a number of Premier League clubs.

The 24-year-old has registered three goals and one assist in 35 appearances in all competitions for Celtic so far in 2021/22.

Troy Parrott (MK Dons)

It was a very good week for Parrott at MK Dons after his long scoring drought ended.

Without a goal since late October, the leader netted a brace in a 3-1 win over Cheltenham Town to keep the pressure on the front two.

Involved in a top-of-the-table clash on Saturday with top-flight Wigan Athletic making the trip to Stadium MK, the hosts secured a valuable point late with Harry Darling’s effort two minutes from time at 1-1 .

Parrott played the full 90 minutes on the right of MK Dons’ front three but unfortunately couldn’t find the back of the net.

The Republic of Ireland international will be back in action on Saturday when his side travel to Cambridge United.

Kion Etete (Town of Cheltenham)

Missing midweek against MK Dons with an ankle injury, Etete missed Cheltenham Town again on Saturday as they won 3-1 at Morecambe.

Speaking after the game, Robins boss Michael Duff spoke about the striker’s absence and what Tottenham had told the club about their player following his injury problem.

“He wasn’t close to the end,” Duff said, as reported by Gloucestershire Live. “It’s not that he wasn’t close to being selected, but he has an injury and we scanned it, he saw a specialist, Tottenham scanned it and they want him see one of their own, but he can’t get in. until Wednesday.

“At the end of the day, he’s their player. Whether he’s fit or not doesn’t matter, they said he wasn’t allowed to play, so he wasn’t allowed to play. It’s up to them to decide.

“We hope and expect that everything will be deemed correct and he will be available for next week, but that has been taken away from us.”

Jack Clarke (Sunderland)

Clarke ended an impressive week in style by helping Sunderland to a 2-0 win over Crewe.

On the scoresheet midweek with a fine effort in their 3-1 win over Fleetwood, the winger earned an assist to his name as he linked up with Patrick Roberts for their second strike on Saturday afternoon.

Clarke was actually playing a slightly different role to usual as boss Alex Neil looked to fit more of his attacking players into the squad.

With former Spurs man Dennis Cirkin playing in the back three, Clarke was on the left and played more of a full-back role in Sunderland’s 3-4-1-2 setup.

The role still gave the York-born striker the opportunity to attack throughout his 90 minutes on the pitch as he helped the Black Cats register another victory in their promotion campaign.

Clarke and Sunderland face a trip to Lincoln City on Saturday afternoon.

Nile John (Charlton Athletic)

Tottenham will have serious concerns over John’s loan to Charlton Athletic after missing out on the matchday team in their 2-1 loss to Accrington Stanley.

An unused substitute in his four appearances on the Charlton bench so far, the 19-year-old has been sidelined completely for the trip to Lancashire.

Speaking after their loss to Accrington, Addicks boss Johnnie Jackson opened up on John and Chelsea Loanne Juan Castillo’s lack of playing time.

“I have players in those positions who, at the moment, are ahead of them,” the former Spurs man said, as reported South London Press.

“I judge every day on what I see in training. There were opportunities. Nile was unlucky as he didn’t get many opportunities.

“Juan had a few chances that he didn’t really take. Nile can feel unfortunate that he didn’t have the chances. I looked to try to get him on the pitch at times, but the nature of the matches and the state of the game, having to make early substitutions in some matches prevented me from doing so.

“[During Saturday’s loss at Accrington] we got Conor [Washington] returning and Sean Clare returning, that meant two from the previous team were to miss. It was just due to my team selection.

Kacper Kurylowicz (Potters Bar Town)

The goalkeeper has been loaned out to non-league side Potters Bar Town, who play in the Isthmian Premier League.

He was again an unused substitute for their 3-2 win at Carshalton Athletic.
