‘Still a top player’: Ligue 1 manager confirms interest in Barcelona misfit

Speaking to the media, Rennes manager Bruno Genesio has admitted the Ligue 1 giants are interested in signing Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti this summer.

Umtiti has endured a torrid time over the past two years, with injuries and a lack of belief in his performances seeing him fall down the pecking order of things at Camp Nou.

The Frenchman only played one game all season last time out and again had to deal with multiple injury issues.

With Barcelona set to announce the imminent signing of Andreas Christensen and push to sign another defender, there’s no room left for Umtiti on the list.

The Blaugrana have already informed the Frenchman that he is free to find a new club and gave him permission to miss the start of pre-season to sort out his future.

Umtiti has attracted interest from clubs in Italy and France. And now Rennes manager Bruno Genesio, who is one of the centre-back’s suitors, has confirmed that the Ligue 1 giants are indeed interested in signing him.

“He’s a player I know perfectly since my time at Olympique Lyonnais. You all know his story, his qualities, the setbacks he had last year, but he is still a top-level player, and we are interested in top-level players. Genesio said, quoted by SPORT.

Umtiti has played under Genesio in the past, playing 21 games under him at Olympique Lyonnais in 2015/16, before arriving at Barcelona.

Rennes have reportedly opened talks with Barcelona over a possible transfer of Umtiti this summer. A return to his homeland where he could play under a coach he has worked with in the past could be a good move for the French ace.
