Mansfield Town manager Nigel Clough has hailed Manchester United loanee Nathan Bishop after his recent display in their win over Exeter City.

The 22-year-old was highlighted as one of the best performers against the Greeks as Mansfield’s promotion moved in a positive direction. Bishop has made 36 appearances for the Stags this season after swapping Manchester for Nottinghamshire at the start of the campaign, keeping 10 clean sheets so far.

“[He was] Absolutely brilliant,” Clough told the City of Mansfield official website. “That’s why he’s a bit disappointed with the mistake [that led to Exeter’s goal].

Matt Jay returned a goal for Exeter late to make it 2-1 in the 94th minute, after a looping cross was knocked down by the Reds youngster, but despite the error Clough praised Bishop. He continued: “When you make a mistake and you still get the three points, that’s fine. He held us down with three or four brilliant saves tonight.”

Goals from Farrend Rawson and Matthew Longstaff lifted Mansfield to third, one point behind second-placed Northampton by two games less. Forest Green currently have a 10-point lead at the top of League Two.

Bishop arrived at United from Southend in the January transfer window in 2020, but made just three appearances for United’s U23s and did not play a senior game for the club.
