Fake reviews can have a devastating effect on a small business. And the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) stands ready to hold the people or companies responsible for this practice to account. The FTC says it is tackling fake reviews online by pledging to protect consumers and the competition.
It aims to do so by preventing anti-competitive, deceptive and unfair business practices and using its authority for criminal offenses to educate advertisers about the law and prevent them from breaking those laws.
This practice is driven by the proliferation of social media and the way it has blurred the line between authentic content and advertising. And this has led to the trivialization of deceptive and dishonest online approvals, leading to the growth of bogus reviews online. Samuel Levine, director of the FTC’s Office of Consumer Protection, says, âAdvertisers will pay a price if they engage in these deceptive practices.
