FA to repay £ 175million government loan today and Euro 2020 stars to get bonuses after emergency funding during Covid

The FA will repay the entire government Covid loan of £ 175million today – and will finally be able to pay the English heroes of Euro 2020 their bonuses.

The governing body was forced to put in place emergency funding last December to allow them to continue negotiating despite the effects of the pandemic.

But SunSport understands that Wembley bosses will transfer the full balance to Whitehall coffers by the time business closes.

And that will see them finally freed from the shackles of funding terms.

Obstacles that had prevented them from rewarding the players and staff of the Three Lions who reached the final of the Euro last summer.

Not all players have yet received any money from the FA for their performances in the tournament.

This amount is estimated to be around £ 300,000 per man.

The figure is made up of a pre-granted deal that allowed the FA to keep 60% of the prizes in euros, with the rest being split between players, coaches and backstage staff.

FA bosses have faced a financial nightmare since the coronavirus hit, with all major sponsors demanding reductions in their contract terms as a result.

The stoppage of play and empty stadiums meant the governing body was unable to meet contractual obligations with each sponsor regarding tickets, corporate events and player activation.
